Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 1 in D major, Op. 12

Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major (Spring), Op. 24

Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 10 in G major, Op. 96

For their programme, Barnabás Kelemen and Péter Nagy selected some of the greatest pieces from the literature of the sonata, Beethoven’s works for violin and piano. In contrast to the piano sonatas, the string quartets or the symphonies, Beethoven did not write violin sonatas throughout his career. However, the ten pieces sufficiently, almost exhaustively, characterize the decade during which the composer’s distinctive style crystallized.

The Kossuth and Liszt Ferenc Prize laureate Barnabás Kelemen is a versatile soloist and chamber musician, the artistic director of festivals, and an educator at prestigious institutions, who for some years has also been active as a conductor. He regularly performs in the world’s leading concert venues, such as the Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw, the Royal Festival Hall, the Palais de Beaux-Arts, Suntory Hall and the Berlin Philharmonic.

Péter Nagy’s international career was set in motion by his first place at Hungarian Radio’s 1979 piano competition. As a chamber musician, he is now a frequent guest of prestigious festivals in Europe and overseas. He regularly collaborates with Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos, and the two have given concerts in the USA, Spain, Greece, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and Hungary.

This concert of the Budapest Spring Festival is presented by Müpa Budapest.
